Hard water and hair: what the minerals do, and what they do not

Hard water leaves a film that makes hair rough, dull and tangled. The one controlled study on hair strength found no difference. Here is how to tell if your water is the problem, and the 3 fixes ranked by cost.
Around 85 percent of homes in the United States have hard water, and a large share of the United Kingdom, Australia and continental Europe does too. If your hair became dull, rough and tangled after a move and no product has fixed it, the water is a more likely explanation than your hair.
Hard water is also blamed for hair loss, and here the evidence points the other way. This article separates what the minerals demonstrably do from what they are accused of.
What hard water is
Water that has passed through limestone or chalk picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium. Hardness is measured in milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre or in grains per gallon; anything above around 120 mg/L (7 grains per gallon) is generally called hard, and many areas exceed 180 mg/L. Your water utility publishes the figure, and a test strip from a hardware store gives it in a minute.
When hard water meets soap or some surfactants, the calcium and magnesium react with them to form an insoluble scum, the same film that rings a bath. When it meets hair, the minerals deposit on the cuticle and, over repeated washes, accumulate as a layer.
What the minerals demonstrably do
- Deposit on the cuticle, making the surface rougher. Rough cuticles catch on each other, which is the tangling, and scatter light, which is the dullness.
- Reduce lather. Surfactant is consumed reacting with the minerals before it can foam, so shampoo seems to stop working and people use more of it.
- Leave a film that reads as greasiness or heaviness, particularly at the roots, and that ordinary shampoo does not fully remove.
- Dissolve solid bars faster. A soap-based bar in hard water forms scum and wears down in half its expected life.
- Make colour fade faster and can leave a brassy or greenish tint on light hair, because the deposits interfere with the dye and hold onto copper and iron in the water.
What the one study found about strength
A 2013 study in the International Journal of Trichology took hair samples from healthy volunteers, immersed half of them in hard water and half in distilled water every day for 30 days, and measured tensile strength and elasticity. It found no statistically significant difference between the groups.
That is one small in-vitro study on cut hair, and it does not settle everything. But it is the direct test of the claim that hard water weakens hair, and it did not support it. The reasonable conclusion is that hard water changes how hair feels and behaves far more than it changes what hair is made of.
How to tell if your water is the problem
- Check your utility's published hardness, or use a test strip. Above 120 mg/L, assume it is a factor.
- Look at your shower screen and taps. White scale there is scale on your hair.
- Wash once with bottled or filtered water. If the hair feels noticeably softer and detangles more easily on that one wash, you have your answer.
- Do a single diluted vinegar rinse (one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water, poured through, left two minutes, rinsed). If the film clears in one wash, the film was mineral.

The acid rinse is the fix with the best ratio of effect to cost, and it is the one to try first. If it solves the film, the film was mineral, and a weekly rinse is a complete maintenance routine.
A note on shampoo bars in hard water
Traditional cold-process soap bars react badly with hard water: the fatty acid soap forms scum with the calcium, the bar dissolves quickly, and the hair is left coated. Syndet bars, which use synthetic surfactants rather than saponified oils, do not form scum and behave in hard water much as a liquid shampoo does. If a bar leaves your hair waxy and you live in a hard-water area, check which kind it is before deciding bars are not for you. A following acid rinse fixes most of the residue either way.

- Does hard water cause hair loss?
- Not from the root. Shedding is decided at the follicle by the hair cycle, and surface minerals do not reach it. Hard water makes hair rough and tangled, which increases breakage when brushing, and breakage can look like loss.
- Does hard water weaken hair?
- The one controlled study, which soaked hair in hard and distilled water daily for 30 days, found no significant difference in tensile strength or elasticity. Hard water changes how hair feels more than what it is made of.
- How do I remove hard water buildup from hair?
- A diluted apple cider vinegar rinse (one tablespoon in a cup of water, left two minutes, rinsed) dissolves the mineral film. A chelating shampoo does the same. Weekly is enough.
- Do shower filters fix hard water for hair?
- Most do not. Standard shower filters reduce chlorine and sediment but remove little calcium or magnesium. A whole-house softener works but costs far more. An acid rinse is cheaper and more effective for the film.
- Why does my shampoo bar not lather in hard water?
