Peppermint oil and hair growth: the mouse study everyone cites

In 2014, peppermint oil outperformed minoxidil in mice. That result is on a thousand product pages. Here is what was measured, why mouse hair is not human hair, and what the tingle actually is.

If you have read that peppermint oil grew hair faster than minoxidil, you have read about one study. It was published in 2014 in the journal Toxicological Research, and it is a real, competent piece of work. It was also conducted entirely on mice, which is the detail that tends to fall off in the retelling.

Peppermint is in our bar, so this article is not an argument against the ingredient. It is an argument for describing it accurately, which the category does not.

What the study did

Researchers shaved the backs of mice and divided them into four groups, applying one of four things to the shaved skin once a day for four weeks: saline, jojoba oil, minoxidil 3 percent, or peppermint oil at 3 percent in jojoba. They then measured hair growth by several methods, including photographs, skin thickness, the number and depth of follicles under the microscope, and the expression of a growth factor in the skin.

At week four the peppermint oil group showed the greatest hair growth, ahead of the minoxidil group on the study's scoring. It also showed more and deeper follicles, thicker skin, and higher expression of the growth factor. No signs of toxicity were seen. The authors concluded that peppermint oil promoted hair growth in mice and might be a candidate for further study.

Why a mouse result does not travel

What the tingle is

Peppermint's active constituent is menthol, and menthol activates a cold-sensing receptor in the skin called TRPM8. The receptor fires, the brain registers cold, and the skin feels tingling and fresh. Menthol also causes a brief local increase in blood flow, which is why the scalp can look slightly pink after a mint product.

The tingle is not the product working on your follicles. It is a sensory receptor responding to menthol, and it would happen on your forearm too. Products lean on the sensation because it feels like something is happening, and something is: your skin has detected mint. Whether the transient blood flow increase matters to a follicle over months is not established in humans.

What peppermint honestly offers in a cleanser

  • A cooling, refreshing sensation that many people like and that makes a 60-second scalp cleanse feel worth the time.
  • Mild antimicrobial activity in laboratory testing, which is common to many essential oils and of unclear significance in a rinse-off product.
  • A brief increase in surface blood flow.
  • A pleasant scent that does not require synthetic fragrance.

That is the honest list. It does not include hair growth in humans, because that has not been tested. The 2014 study is a reason to be curious about peppermint. It is not a reason to expect anything from a peppermint shampoo that a peppermint-free one would not also deliver, and anyone telling you otherwise is describing a mouse.

A caution on concentration

Menthol at high concentration irritates skin, and peppermint essential oil applied neat to the scalp causes burning in some people and contact dermatitis in a few. The mouse study used 3 percent in a carrier. Home recipes that add many drops of essential oil to a shampoo or scalp oil can exceed this. If a mint product stings rather than tingles, it is too strong, and the sting is not a sign of efficacy.

Common questions

Does peppermint oil grow hair?
It did in shaved mice over four weeks, in one 2014 study. There is no human trial. Mouse hair cycles in synchronised waves lasting weeks, so the result does not transfer to human pattern hair loss.
Did peppermint oil beat minoxidil?
In mice, on the study's scoring at week four, yes. Minoxidil's human evidence comes from decades of controlled trials in people with pattern hair loss. The two are not comparable claims.
Why does peppermint shampoo tingle?
Menthol activates a cold-sensing receptor in the skin, TRPM8, and causes a brief increase in local blood flow. The tingle is a sensory response to mint, not a sign that follicles are responding.
Is peppermint oil safe on the scalp?
Diluted, generally yes. Neat peppermint essential oil can burn and cause contact dermatitis. The mouse study used 3 percent in a carrier oil. If it stings rather than tingles, it is too strong.
