Sulfate-free shampoo: what sulfates do, and what they do not

Sulfates do not cause hair loss and are not toxic. They are strong detergents that strip a fragile scalp more than it needs. Who benefits from going sulfate-free, who does not, and how to read the surfactant on a label.
Sulfate-free is the most successful two words in hair care marketing, and the claim beneath them has drifted from a reasonable point about harshness into an unreasonable one about danger. This article puts the point back where it belongs.
What a sulfate is
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are anionic surfactants: molecules with a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail that surround grease and let water carry it away. They are cheap, they foam abundantly, and they clean very effectively. That effectiveness is the whole issue. A surfactant that removes all the sebum removes the lipid that the scalp's barrier depends on, and a scalp stripped daily responds by producing more sebum and by becoming more permeable to irritants.
SLS is also a standard laboratory irritant: it is the reference substance used to induce controlled skin irritation in dermatology studies, because it does so reliably at sufficient concentration and contact time. That is a statement about its strength as a detergent, and it is where the sulfate-free case rests.
What a sulfate is not
- Not a carcinogen. The claim that SLS causes cancer traces to a hoax email from the late 1990s. A 2015 review of the human and environmental toxicology of SLS found no evidence of carcinogenicity and concluded it is safe in consumer products at the concentrations used.
- Not a cause of hair loss. There is no mechanism by which a surfactant on the scalp surface affects the hair cycle at the follicle, and no study showing sulfates increase shedding.
- Not absorbed in meaningful amounts. Rinse-off exposure is brief and the molecule does not penetrate healthy skin significantly.
- Not the same as sulfites or sulfur allergies. The names are similar and the chemistry is unrelated.
Who benefits from going sulfate-free

The under-cleaning problem
The failure mode of sulfate-free products is the one nobody warns about: they can leave the scalp under-cleaned. Milder surfactants lift less oil and much less silicone, and someone who switches to a gentle cleanser while continuing to use dry shampoo, silicone serums and styling product will accumulate a film within weeks and conclude that the gentle product made their hair greasy. It did not; it stopped removing something the sulfate had been removing.
The fix is either to reduce the inputs or to keep a stronger cleanser for a weekly clarifying wash. Sulfate-free as a daily default with a sulfate reset once a week is a routine that suits a lot of people, and it is more honest than pretending one product does everything.
How to read the surfactant on a label
The surfactant is usually the second ingredient, after water. Here is how the common ones sort, from harshest to mildest, with the caveat that formulation matters as much as the molecule: a well-buffered SLS shampoo can be gentler than a badly formulated sulfate-free one.

One thing to notice: sulfate-free on the front does not tell you how mild the product is. Olefin sulfonate is sulfate-free and nearly as strong as SLES. The label that matters is the one on the back.
Where thinning hair fits
If your hair is thinning and your scalp is reactive, a gentler surfactant will make the scalp more comfortable, reduce irritation, and reduce the sebum rebound that makes people wash harder. That is a real benefit. It is not a treatment for thinning, and no surfactant choice changes how many hairs enter the resting phase this month. Choose the cleanser for the scalp you have. Address the thinning with the person who can diagnose it.

- Is sodium lauryl sulfate toxic?

- Should I use sulfate-free shampoo for thinning hair?

- What is the mildest shampoo surfactant?
- Glucosides (decyl glucoside, coco-glucoside) and cocamidopropyl betaine are among the mildest. Sodium cocoyl isethionate is mild and is the usual base of solid syndet bars.
